What is Black Friday?
Before we get to 2023, it's worth remembering that in the 1970s, many American and Canadian retailers came up with the idea of reviving this birth tradition by launching a day of exceptional promotions to boost their sales and clear stocks for the current year.
In the United States, this initiative lured customers with incredible discounts, but only in stores. Nothing was done online until the following Monday, known as Cyber Monday.
The idea quickly spread to all US states and crossed the Atlantic to finally reach Europe around 2013.
Why is it called Black Friday?
One explanation is that on a Friday in November 1887, protesters were killed for demonstrating in favor of the eight-hour workday in Chicago. "Black Friday" takes on a very sinister meaning here.
A second version tells of a financial crash that almost occurred in 1869, when two businessmen tried to fraudulently raise the price of gold. The disaster was averted, but the expression "Black Friday" was retained, again in the sense of dangerous, critical.
When is Black Friday 2023?
Wondering what the date of this year's Black Friday will be? The big shopping holiday always falls on the day after Thanksgiving, which means it will be on Friday, November 24, 2023 - the fourth Friday in November.
